Maslenitsa Festival

Fontanka is the name of the beautiful canal that goes through the center of Saint-Petersburg and it takes its beginning outside of the city, right next to gorgeous summer palace of the first emperor of Russia - Peter The Great.  Fontanka is translated in Russian as “fountain” and such name the canal received after the fountains in Summer garden of Emperor palace as the water from this small river was used as a water source to sustain the work of fountains.Maslenitsa is one of the oldest Slavic festivals and celebrates the end of Winter and beginning of Spring. The sun-festival has its origin over 2’000 years ago in pagan traditions and got adopted by the Orthodox Church as the last week before the start of the Great Fast (or Great Lent) before Easter.
