This truly historic place was founded by Peter The Great in 1703 and marks the beginning of Saint-Petersburg.  In order to secure the newly planned city against attacks from neighbouring countries, the Emperor decided to build a complex star shaped fortress with thick walls and six powerful bastions.

The fortress however was never tested and was used over time as the location for the royal mint, a prison or museum. Many famous Russians have been incarcerated here such as the author Fyodor Dostoevsky or the revolutionary Leon Trotsky. In the centre of the  fortress the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral can be found with the world's largest Orthodox bell tower. The cathedral also functions as the imperial tomb containing the remains of the Tsarist family.

St. Isaac's Cathedral is the largest church in Russia and the second largest Orthodox church in the world. Due to its size and hight, the material was used and the complex architectural design it took 40 years to build the church. The dome of the cathedral rises as high as 101.5 metres and is plated in pure gold. For this reason the dome was painted over grey during the Second World War in order to avoid attraction by enemy aircrafts. Next to being a museum the church is also used as a place of worship and services and celebrations are held here. One of the highlights of the visit is climbing up the stairs to the dome to enjoy a beautiful view over the city.
